India is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity and hosts a wide variety of endemic wildlife species. Among these, eight animals are exclusively found within  its borders.

Bengal Tiger

The Bengal Tiger, recognized as India's national animal, inhabits the dense forests  and grasslands throughout the nation.

Lion-tailed Macaque

The Lion-tailed Macaque, an endangered species, resides in the Western Ghats of South India and derives its name from its tail, which resembles that of a lion.

Gangetic Dolphins

Gangetic Dolphins inhabit the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers and are considered one of the oldest species on the planet.

Nilgiri Tahr

The Nilgiri Tahr, the state animal of Tamil Nadu, is located in the Western Ghats and is identifiable by its short, coarse fur and curved horns.

One-horned  Rhino

The One-horned Indian Rhinoceros is indigenous to the grasslands and swamps of northeastern India, primarily feeding on grasses, leaves, and aquatic plants.

Indian Gharial

The Indian Gharial, an endangered crocodilian species, is found in the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, characterized by its long, slender snout lined with  sharp teeth.

Asiatic Lion

The Asiatic Lion is exclusive  to the Gir forest in Gujarat and is smaller in size compared to its African counterparts.

Kashmir Hangul

The Kashmir Hangul represents a distinct subspecies of the Asian red deer, primarily located in the Kashmir Valley and the northern regions of the Chamba District in  Himachal Pradesh.
