DIPHU, Oct 9: The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking the non-inclusion of Karbi and Dimasa people within the purview of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, signed in 1985.
The memorandum submitted by party president Jotson Bey stated that the ASDC had earlier expressed their views on the issue of implementation of Clause 6 to the High-Level Committee on ‘Assamese definition’ and proposals for safeguarding Karbi and Dimasa tribes.

“As sought by the Committee, the ASDC wants to place its views and suggestions like reservation of seats in Parliament and Assembly, Reservation of seats in Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), where only Karbis and Dimasas and other scheduled tribes should have the right to contest and get elected to the Autonomous Councils of Karbi Anglong and NC Hills,” the memorandum stated.
It further highlighted, “Karbi language should be brought into the list of Eight Scheduled to the Constitution of India and reservation of jobs.”
The memorandum also sought for the traditional Karbi chieftainship to be given due recognition and status by the government, reservation of 90 per cent of jobs under KAAC and NCHAC, and the protection of land rights of the indigenous people.
It has called for the implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Constitution for safeguarding, protecting, preserving, and promoting the cultural, social, and linguistic identity and heritage of the indigenous tribes of the two hill districts.
