2nd Santosh Kumar Karmakar Memorial Award to novelist Nabin Baruah

SIVASAGAR, Dec 13: The 2nd Santosh Kumar Karmakar Memorial Award will be given to novelist Nabin Baruah of ‘Cotton College’ fame. Born in 1945, Nabin Baruah is a veteran writer besides being a journalist of repute. He was the first producer of the popular radio programme ‘Yuva Vani’. He was the first president of the Book Publishers and Book Sellers Association and was the man behind the first successful organisation of ‘North East Book Fair’ in Guwahati.
Announcing the award to the media on Tuesday, Dr Saumerjyoti Mahanta, principal, Sibsagar Commerce College and president of the Award Committee said that the committee including Dipti Karmakar, wife of late (Prof) Santosh Kumar Karmakar, is happy to confer the award for the year 2021-2022 to another renowned writer and novelist Nabin Baruah who was born in Kalibari in Sivasagar. The award consists of a memento, cash amount and a citation will be handed over to the recipient in a function which will be held at Alumni Building, Cotton College in Guwahati on December 18 by Narayan Konwar, Commissioner, Higher Education, government of Assam.
The presentation ceremony will be addressed by novelist Monikuntala Bhattacharjya and Dr Binita Bora Devchowdhury of Bhattadev University.
It is pertinent to mention here that Prof Santosh Kumar Karmakar was an exceptionally brilliant writer in Assamese even though his mother tongue was Bengali. He worked as a mathematics teacher at Sibsagar Commerce College prior to residing in Guwahati Lankeswar permanently. Winner of a national award from Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad (1996), Sitanath Brahma Choudhury Memorial Literary Award from Asam Sahitya Sabha (1998) and Upanyas-Shree Award from Asamiya Sahitya Sanmilani (2021).
