Assam: Public Servant’s son arrested in hit-and-run case

Guwahati, Feb 9: In a shocking incident of power abuse, a 20-year-old, son of a public servant, was arrested by Basistha Police in Guwahati on Friday over a hit-and-run case resulting in a fatality.

The unfortunate event occurred on January 26, when the accused allegedly ran his speeding vehicle over a 54-year-old man, Narabahdur Thapa, killing him instantly.

The mishap occurred at around 8:30 pm on national highway-27 at Nalapara sub locality, under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station, where the vehicle fled the scene. Post the incident, a case numbered 62/24 was registered under sections 279/304 (A) for negligent and rash driving.

Initially, based on witness accounts, the car involved was believed to be a police vehicle. The police statement later revealed that the suspected vehicle was fitted with Red/Green lights and siren equipment typically used in police vehicles, thereby shedding light on a potential misuse of power.
