Guwahati, April 26: Assam registered a healthy score of 70.68 per cent voter turnout for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections with Darran-Udalgiri constituency witnessing a high voter turnout.
The polling in Darrang-Udalguri witnessed the highest voter turnout at 72.99 percent, closely followed by Nagaon at 71.88 percent, Karimganj at 71.12 percent, Diphu at 69.65 percent, and Silchar at 65.57 percent.
Tripura topped the list with a record voter turnout of 78.53 percent, while Uttar Pradesh saw the lowest at 53.71 percent. In other news, a train derailment between New Harangajao and Jatinga Lumpur railway stations in Assam’s Dima Hasao district disrupted services and affected passengers, causing inconvenience and impacting the democratic process.
The incident occurred on the Badarpur to Lumding route, leading to the suspension of all railway services on this track.
The railway department has arranged free bus services for stranded passengers, including those on the 12503 Bangalore to Agartala Express and the 15611 Rangiya to Silchar train. Some passengers, however, have opted to travel to Silchar in private vehicles. The disruption has sparked frustration among passengers who feel their voting rights have been compromised, with the central government bearing the brunt of the blame.
