GUWAHATI, Sept 20: Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Arup Raha has been appointed as the chancellor of Assam University (AU) by President Droupadi Murmu. He will hold this position for a five-year term, effective from September 15. This appointment was made in accordance with Statute 1 of the Assam University Act, 1989. Air Chief Marshal Raha, aged 69, takes over from noted poet, lyricist, and filmmaker Gulzar.
In this role, Air Chief Marshal Raha will carry out the powers and functions outlined in the Act and statute of Assam University. The appointment followed a letter from the director of the Department of Higher Education of the Union Ministry of Education.
A university chancellor is an honorary figurehead who represents the institution at various ceremonial and ambassadorial events. In central universities like Assam University, the chancellor is appointed by the President of India, who serves as the visitor of the university. (With inputs from PTI)
