JORHAT, May 9: The Jorhat district branch of Indian Red Cross Society observed the World Red Cross Day on Thursday by organising a programme at the Jorhat High School, which included art and essay competitions among the students in two categories.
A member of Jorhat district branch of the Red Cross Society informed that the event began with paying tributes before the portrait of Jean Henry Dunant, the man behind the establishment of the International Red Cross Society, the global humanitarian organisation.
Senior teacher of school Anamika Saikia inaugurated the programme, which was anchored by Bidyut Bhusan Bora, Secretary, Jorhat district brançh, Indian Red Cross Society.
Indrajit Kumar Barua, a noted writer and a retired Secretary of the State Government, and Dr Balin Khargharia, a known social worker and a retired Joint Director of Health Services, along with Jayanta Hazarika, Treasurer, Jorhat district branch of the humanitarian body (Red Cross Society) and Suresh Baruah, a social worker, gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners.
Speaking on the occasion they highlighted the significance of the day and the activities of the organisation that is involved in a wide range of activities focused on humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and promoting international humanitarian law.
These activities include providing medical care, emergency relief, disaster preparedness, and supporting victims of conflict and violence.
The programme was also attended by Red Cross Society workers Sanjeev Bora, Sudip Sarkar, Devjit Bargohain Dr. Pankaj Nath, Naren Chandra Bora amongst others.
The certificate of life members of Indian Red Cross society and position holders, participation certificate of the essay and Art competitions were also distributed at the event. Earlier the Headmaster of the school Abidur Rahman delivered the welcome address.
