SIVASAGAR, Aug 3: Two factions of the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) on Sunday took divergent stands over a bundh called in Sivasagar on Monday.

In the morning, the Milan Borgohain-led faction announced a 5 am to 5 pm Sivasagar bundh at a press meet opposing the state government’s reported decision to elect a Scheduled Tribe candidate as president of the Jila Parishad.

The faction contended that the post should go to an Ahom, claiming that the community accounts for over 70 per cent of the district’s population.

However in the evening, the Basanta Gogoi-led camp of the union opposed the strike.

Partha Pratim Gogoi, president of the Sivasagar district unit, urged the people to maintain normal life, saying programmes like bundhs disturb the unity among various communities who have been living together peacefully in the district.
