DIPHU, April 22: A rescued bear cub, male, was handed over to the Forest department in presence of the chief executive member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, by Uttam Bey of Bhelughat, Karbi Anglong.
Uttom Bey of Beloghat rescued the cub a few weeks ago from a jungle near his cultivation site and brought it home. He was taking care of the cub all this while. This morning, he brought the cub from Beloghat to be handed over to the Forest department.
“I was working in the field when I heard my dogs barking. I went to see what was going on and saw a bear cub. I brought the cub home and took care of it,” Bey said.
DFO Rongpi said the cub has been received by the Forest department and it will be kept at the Range office where it will be given proper care. It cannot be kept there for long and will later be relocated to the Rescue Centre at Kaziranga National Park, he informed.
The Forest department has given Bey a reward.
MLA Bidyasing Engleng; chief conservator of forest (CCF), IFS, Vipin Kumar Bansal; DFO, Jogonath Rongpi and ranger Rajen Rongpi, Rongthe-ang were also present on the occasion.
