SIVASAGAR, Aug 22: The freshers’ social of Bir Lachit Borpukhan College, Sivasagar, was held in the college’s new auditorium on Thursday. Dipali Neog, principal (i/c) of the college, presided over the meeting. Hemanta Panging, general secretary of the College Students’ Union, delivered the welcome address, while Rituparna Gogoi spoke on the objectives of the meeting. The students of the college presented the inaugural song.
During the meeting, Sahityacharjya Nahendra Padun released the book ‘Phonetics: A Teacher’s Handbook’ written by Khagen Gogoi, former head master of Desangmukh High School. In his speech, Padun mentioned that German scholars of the 18th and 19th centuries first introduced Sanskrit classics to the Western world, from which European linguists could appreciate the depth of language research done by the great Sanskrit grammarian Panini and others in ancient Bharat. He lauded Khagen Gogoi’s effort in composing a Teacher’s Handbook for English teachers.
As the appointed speaker, Manoj Kumar Borthakur urged the students not to be deterred by obstacles once they set their targets. He emphasised that the new digital age offers a sea of opportunities for those confident in navigating it. Referring to Khagen Gogoi’s book, Borthakur noted that it would be very helpful for English teachers. Khagen Gogoi thanked the college authority and Nahendra Padun for their kind words.
Nakul Chetia, a social worker, was felicitated by the college for his valuable contribution to society. Dipali Neog discussed changes in the curriculum under the New Education Policy. Students Navajyoti Kaman, Princy Chetia, and Niranjan Gogoi performed modern songs. Educationists Jayanta Madhov Gogoi, Rajen Mili, Prof. Bakul Chetia, Manju Chetia, and Anil Panging attended the function.
