BJP gears up for upcoming Gaon Panchayat polls

DIBRUGARH, Jan 9: The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Thursday held their first meeting with the party workers for the upcoming Gaon  panchayat polls.

Party workers and representatives from three Lok Sabha seats viz. Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Lakhimpur participated in the meeting chaired by the BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita.

Talking to media persons, state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita said, “We have organised the meeting here for the upcoming Gaon Panchayat elections. We have discussed strategies and a roadmap for the polls. We will take up development as our agenda for the Gaon panchayt polls. It’s a grassroot election and very important for us”. 

State BJP spokesperson Subhash Dutta said, “We have organised a party meeting for the upcoming Gaon panchayat polls in Dibrugarh where district presidents from eight districts of upper Assam have participated to discuss the roadmap and strategies ahead of the panchayat polls”.

“The meeting was held for Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seats. Legislatures from all the legislative assemblies attended the meeting.  Gaon panchayat elections is very important for us because we have taken a slew of measures to strengthen the  Gaon Panchayat,” Dutta said.

Assam Pradesh BJP Prabhari Harish Dwivedi, state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, Lakhimpur Lok Sabha MP Pradhan Baruah, state education minister Ranoj Pegu, power minister Prasanta Phukan, MLAs and party members from respective legislative assemblies participated in the meeting.

The elections will determine representatives for 397 Zilla Parishad Constituencies, 181 Anchalik Panchayats, 2,193 Gaon Panchayats, and 21,930 wards in 27 districts, excluding Sixth Schedule and municipal areas.

The Assam State Election Commission has recently published the draft electoral rolls, factoring in the 2024 delimitation of village, Anchalik, and Zilla Parishad constituencies.

The rolls list 17,554,589 voters, including 8,829,927 male voters, 8,724,274 female voters, and 388 other voters, across 23,781 polling stations.
