GUWAHATI, Feb 9: Under the banner of Central Trade Unions such as INTUC, AITUC, CITU, AICCTU, etc., a significant rally took place in Tinsukia district, encompassing Rangara, GNB, and AT Road. Hundreds of workers participated in this event, culminating in a public meeting at the Community Hall Tambulbari, Tinsukia. The meeting featured speeches from Central Trade Union leaders Nagen Chutia (CITU) and Subhas Sen (AICCTU), among others, who criticised the policies of the government. Ranjan Chowdhury, secretary of AITUC Assam State Committee, strongly condemned the government, accusing it of diverting attention from crucial issues under the guise of the Ram Mandir agenda.
Chowdhury passionately called upon the working class to unite and remove the current government from power in the forthcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. He laid out a series of crucial demands, including the cessation of artificial price hikes and the assurance of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops with guaranteed procurement. Additionally, he emphasised the necessity of implementing a uniform minimum wage of Rs 26,000 per month nationwide for workers, alongside the repeal of the four labour codes and the contentious amendments to IPC/CrPC. Furthermore, Chowdhury advocated for the establishment of a minimum wage of Rs 661 per day for tea garden workers and the immediate cessation of privatisation within PSU. Lastly, he stressed the importance of promptly ending hit and run laws against drivers.
Additionally, Chowdhury called upon the people of Assam to support a massive state mobilisation and industrial/sectoral strike on February 15, 2024, in protest against the anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national policies of the RSS-BJP government at both the central and state levels.
