Cultural organisation to present puppet play on freedom fighter Bishnu Prasad Rabha

GUWAHATI, Aug 17: In commemoration of Independence Day, Surojit Academy, a cultural organisation in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Akademi, is set to showcase a puppet play centered around the life of freedom fighter and cultural maestro Bishnu Prasad Rabha. The play is scheduled to take place on August 20 at the Dr Banikanta Kakati Auditorium in Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, starting from 6:00 pm.

The puppet play, based on the remarkable life of Bishnu Prasad Rabha, is written by Simanta Sarma, a recipient of the senior fellowship from the ministry of Culture and a professor at SBMS College. The play has been directed by Binita Devi, an artist honoured with the Tagore Research scholarship. Abhijit Barman is responsible for the music direction of the play.

Distinguished personalities from the world of education and folklore will grace the event’s inauguration. These include Dr Anil Saikia, a renowned folklorist-educationist and retired principal of Moran College, Dr Jagadish Patgiri, professor of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Dr Biraj Das, retired professor and educationist of Damdama College, and Dr Harendra Bora, professor of Assam Engineering College and educationist.

The puppet play titled ‘Bishnu Prasad Rabha’ has received acclaim on numerous cultural stages under the government of India. This presentation seeks to honour the legacy of Bishnu Prasad Rabha, a prominent figure who contributed significantly to both the freedom movement and cultural enrichment. The event promises to be a compelling portrayal of his life, achievements, and impact, adding to the celebrations of Independence Day.
