GUWAHATI, July 21: The flood situation in Assam has shown significant improvement, with the number of affected people decreasing to 23,447 from the previous day’s 36,469. However, the Brahmaputra river continues to flow above the danger level mark in Dhubri, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Despite the improvement, the situation is expected to worsen as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state from Saturday. The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has also issued a warning for thunderstorms and lightning in the next 24 hours until Saturday night.
Currently, 112 villages in Barpeta, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, and Sivasagar are reeling under floodwaters. The floods have also affected 12,729 animals. Additionally, Biswanath, Majuli, and Kamrup (M) are facing infrastructure damage due to the floods.
Massive erosions have been reported from several areas, including Biswanath, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup (M), Lakhimpur, Morigaon, and Nalbari.
Moreover, urban flooding was reported in Dispur, Guwahati on Friday. Fortunately, there were no new reports of fatalities on Friday, keeping the death toll at nine. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to address the challenges posed by the floods and heavy rainfall.
