GUWAHATI, July 20: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement as rainfall decreased. The number of people affected by the floods decreased to 36,469 in nine districts and subdivisions of the state. However, around 1069.93 hectares of agricultural land are still under water.
Currently, 139 villages are inundated due to the floods. Fortunately, there have been no new reports of fatalities, and the death toll from this year’s floods remains at nine.
Relief efforts are ongoing, with 232 people seeking shelter at relief camps, with 223 in Chirang and 9 in Sivasagar.
The rising water levels of the river Rukni in Cachar caused the breach of fifteen embankments, and infrastructure was affected in Dhemaji and Sivasagar as well.
While the Brahmaputra river continues to flow above the danger level at Dhubri, Tezpur, and Nimatighat, other rivers in the state are showing a falling trend.
However, the flood situation has led to massive erosions in several areas, including Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Majuli, and Nalbari.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and continuing their efforts to mitigate the impacts of the floods on communities and infrastructure.
