JORHAT, Sept 9: Chandra Neog, in charge of the Jalukonibari Police Outpost under Titabar Police Station, was suspended on Monday for alleged negligence in handling an accident, which reportedly led to the death of a youth.
According to sources, the accident occurred on the Soongi-Kakodonga road around 10 pm on Sunday night. Three youths from Bamunibari tea garden were en route to visit a Ganesh puja mandap when their motorcycle was struck from behind by a car. Local residents rushed to the scene and found two of the youths lying on one side of the road, while the third, later identified as Rajaram Bhumiz, was thrown into the bushes on the opposite side.
The two injured youths, Akash Gowala and Bimal Gowala, also from Bamunibari tea garden, were immediately taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital by the locals, and the police were informed. However, it is alleged that the police arrived almost two hours later, around midnight, and failed to notice Bhumiz, as they were only using mobile phones as torches. The source further claimed that the police were in an inebriated state, which hindered their ability to properly inspect the scene. Bhumiz reportedly lost his life due to the delay in receiving medical attention.
The incident sparked a protest in the area, but it was brought under control following the arrival of additional police forces from Titabar Police Station.
