DIPHU, Feb 19: In a significant move aimed at reclaiming and preserving grazing reserve lands, Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang of Karbi Anglong announced on Monday the initiation of an eviction drive across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.
This decision follows demands from various organisations, including the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), for the removal of encroachers from these lands.
Ronghang revealed that the ASDC, Karbi Students Association, ASDC Youth Front, and Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong had urged the council to take action against encroachers on Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) lands. Although the specific start date for the eviction drive was not disclosed during his statement to the media.
“We have discussed it and we decided that we will begin the work (of eviction),” Ronghang stated during his interaction with reporters.
Furthermore, Ronghang announced plans for a comprehensive meeting on Tuesday involving political parties, social organisations, student bodies, former MPs, former CEMs, and other stakeholders to deliberate on the issue and arrive at a final decision.
The development comes in the wake of a meeting between ASDC president Chandra Kanta and the CEM at the KAAC Secretariat.
However, Kanta claimed that the CEM assured the eviction drive would commence from Tuesday, expressing satisfaction with the progress of talks.
“He (CEM) said that the eviction drive will start from tomorrow. As of now, we are satisfied as he said he agreed 100 per cent with our demands. He said the process would take time but that’s all right; we have given 30 days. The talk was successful,” claimed Kanta.
Additionally, commenting on the recent incident of an attack in Kheroni Sariali on February 15, Ronghand announced that Rs 1 lakh compensation would be provided from the CEM Relief fund to the injured. He also reassured that legal action was being pursued against the perpetrators, with 18 individuals already arrested.
The CEM emphasised the importance of maintaining communal harmony and peace amid ongoing developments.
Meanwhile, the situation regarding the undeclared bandh in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong has shown signs of improvement, with markets reopening and public transport services resuming operations.
