DIPHU, June 21: Karbi Anglong on Friday joined the global celebration of International Day of Yoga with various programs organised by youth clubs, paramilitary forces, and schools.
The event in Diphu town included yoga sessions and activities marking the theme for this year, ‘Yoga for Self and Society.’
Initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to recognize yoga’s ancient Indian roots and its profound impact on mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June 21, 2015 and continues annually worldwide.
At the Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) indoor stadium, the District Administration, Karbi Anglong, collaborated with the National Ayush Mission and District Health Society for the International Yoga Day event.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, emphasised yoga’s benefits for overall well-being, announcing plans to establish yoga centers in each of the region’s 26 MAC constituencies to promote its practice.
“Yoga will be promoted in Karbi Anglong and for that yoga centres will be set-up in every sports complex in the 26 MAC constituencies,” he said.
Ronghang also praised PM Modi for elevating yoga to an international platform and raising awareness about its physical, mental, and spiritual advantages.
The morning session attracted over 700 participants from diverse backgrounds, including children from local academies, members of sports associations, and personnel from CRPF and Assam Police. Art of Living instructors led participants through various yoga poses.
On the occasion, the district commissioner (DC) Madhumita Bhagawati highlighted the enthusiastic participation across different age groups and announced a district-level yoga competition.
In various age categories, participants competed, with winners like Mangal Deep Ronghang, Sangmir Teronpi, and Demi Jigdung receiving recognition for their performances.
Elsewhere in Karbi Anglong, NCC cadets at Taralangso and local communities in Bokajan, Balipathar, Hanjanglangso, and Khatkhati also observed the International Day of Yoga with fervor.
Deputy speaker and Bokajan MLA Dr Numol Momin participated in yoga activities at Balipathar Higher Secondary School, while Ajit Dey, Deputy chairman of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, joined youth and students for yoga at Howraghat Stadium, Shankardev Vidya Neketan, and Howraghat Srimanta Vidyalay.
