JORHAT, Sept 9: A Mahila Congress Committee rally was organised by the Jorhat district unit of Mahila Congress as part of the ‘Nari Nyay Andolan’ programme on Monday, with support from Mahila Congress units of Golaghat, Sivasagar, and Majuli districts. The rally was led by State Mahila Congress president, Mira Borthakur.
The protest was organised under the direction of the Assam Mahila Congress Committee, demanding the implementation of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023’, the withdrawal of smart metres by APDCL, control over skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, and ensuring the safety and security of women and children.
Protesters, holding banners, placards, and party flags, shouted slogans seeking the implementation of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023’, which aims to allocate 33 percent of the total number of seats to women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, along with the fulfilment of other demands.
Borthakur stated that the party would continue to organise protest programmes until the full implementation of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023’, which was passed by Parliament in September last year. She urged the state government to take immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of women and girls, citing the recent rise in incidents of sexual attacks on women and minor girls.
The State Mahila Congress president further demanded that smart metres installations across the state be stopped immediately and those already installed be replaced with the previous versions, as people across Assam have been complaining of a significant increase in their monthly electricity bills.
Borthakur also pointed out that the recent soaring prices of essential commodities have severely impacted common people, and the government has failed to take effective action in this regard.
A meeting of Mahila Congress members was also held at the Sankardev Kala Krishti Gaveshanar Kendra, where Borthakur, along with several other leaders and functionaries, addressed members of the Mahila Congress units from Jorhat and the three adjoining districts.
