MORIGAON, Sept 9: The Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), Morigaon district committee, submitted a memorandum to the district commissioner of Morigaon on Monday, urging the strict enforcement of the State Language Act, across all businesses, government, and non-government institutions in the state.
Expressing concern over the diminishing use of the Assamese language in official work, the organisation pointed out that English has increasingly become the dominant language in Assam’s government offices and courts. They demanded immediate steps to uphold the State Language Act and ensure that Assamese is used in all official communications and documents.
The memorandum was handed over to additional district commissioner Pallavi Kachari, in the absence of district commissioner Devashish Sharma. Led by its chief advisor, the organisation called for the compulsory use of Assamese in all government correspondences, signboards, banners, and documents. They further demanded that signboards of all business establishments in the district display Assamese in large letters above any other language, stating that this is not merely an emotional appeal but a demand for constitutional justice.
The union urged the administration to implement their demands in good faith at the earliest.
