MORIGAON, Oct 31: In the monthly meeting of the District Level Narco Coordination Center Committee, chaired by Morigaon District Superintendent of Police Hemant Kumar Das, crucial discussions ensued to tackle the prevalence of drugs in the district.
The SP emphasized the imperative need for raising awareness to combat both the demand and supply of narcotics. Noting the gravity of the situation, he highlighted that 121 cases under the NDPS Act were registered in Morigaon district until October this year. Seizures included 1,365 grams of heroin, approximately 95 kg of ganja, phlegm syrup, and narcotic tablets.
Expressing concern, the SP revealed that despite 200 arrests under the NDPS Act this year, a drop in the number of arrests was observed, signaling the adoption of new tactics by drug dealers. Particularly worrisome was the involvement of women and children in these criminal activities, raising serious concerns.
The meeting addressed the issue of illegal and fake licenses used by some in the district, urging drug inspectors to collaborate with the police and administration in conducting extensive raids to curb illegal pharmacies.
District Development Commissioner Devayani Chowdhury advocated the closure of illegal pharmacies and emphasized a thorough investigation into the illicit sale of narcotic drugs from such establishments.
Moreover, plans were discussed to form a special group comprising police and district administration to assess the condition and operation of drug rehabilitation centers in the district.
The SP encouraged citizens to report any information related to drug use by contacting 112 or informing the police. Present at the meeting were Additional District Commissioner Dyotibha Bora, Additional Superintendent of Police, and heads of various departments.
The district remains resolute in its efforts to combat drug circulation and illegal activities through collaborative and strategic measures.
