SHILLONG, Aug 26: Relentless rainfall in the past 24 hours triggered a mudslide that blocked the Sonapur tunnel on NH 6 in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on Saturday. This obstruction disrupted traffic movement towards Tripura, Mizoram, and Assam’s Barak valley, according to local police reports.
The impact of the mudslide trapped two vehicles, informed Jagpal S Dhanoa, superintendent of police. He stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was alerted to ensure the necessary clearance for normal traffic flow on the crucial NH 6, which links three northeastern states.
To address the situation, earthmovers and personnel were deployed to clear the debris and extricate the stranded vehicles, as confirmed by an NHAI official. (With inputs from PTI)
