Morigaon, July 23: Nine Nath-Jugi organisations have issued a warning of launching an agitation if the Morigaon constituency does not receive reservation-free status. The Nath-Jugi community, one of Assam’s ethnic communities, makes up 18 percent of the total population, with religious minorities comprising 24 percent, Tiwa at 20 percent, Koch Rajbongshi at 13 percent, Kalita Janagusthi at 10 percent, SC at 9 percent, and Brahmin at 3 percent.

Having a significant presence in the Morigaon constituency, the Nath-Jugi community plays a crucial role in both assembly and parliamentary elections. Nine organisations representing the ethnic community Nath-Jugi expressed concerns about the lack of reservation for the constituency, which was requested by the state BJP before the Chief Election Commission of India to designate the constituency as a reserve for ST (Scheduled Tribe) in a writ petition.

The organisations threatened to launch a major agitation in the state if the decision to reserve the Morigaon constituency for ST becomes a reality. They believe that such a move would endanger the political future and existence of the ethnic community.

In a joint statement released to the media, the nine organisations, including Asom Pradeshik Yogi Sanmiloni, Asom Pradeshik Yogi Mahila Sanmiloni, Asom Nath Yogi Yuba Parishad, Nath Sahitya Sabha, Asom Pradeshik Yogi Puruhit Sanmiloni, and Nath Yogi Upgrahiya Autonomous Parishad Dabi Samiti, called the decision to reserve the Morigaon constituency for ST “mysterious”. They asserted that the ethnic community has been neglected politically, economically, and socially in Assam.

The Nath-Jugi community holds significant voting power in seven assembly constituencies and two parliamentary constituencies in Assam, including Bilasipara Pub, Sipajhar, Morigaon, Hojai, and Barchala assembly constituencies. The leaders of the nine organisations urged the state BJP to reconsider its decision and refrain from making hasty choices, advocating for the constituency to remain reservation-free.
