DIPHU, Feb 23: Hundreds of representatives and leaders of the Nonia community across India gathered at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Sunday for a massive protest organised by the Rachnatmak Nonia Sanyukta Sangh (RNSS). Led by RNSS National General Secretary, Abhishek Kumar, the demonstration called for urgent government action to address long-standing demands related to socio-economic rights, social recognition, and welfare measures for the marginalized community.
The protest saw participation from prominent RNSS leaders, including National treasurer Kalicharan Mahato, National co-treasurer Manoj Mahato, Delhi state president Sanjay Mahato, and Assam State President Arjun Mahato.
Delegations from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, and Assam joined the agitation. Senior social workers, women activists, and legal advisor of Assam’s Gauhati High Court, Advocate Radheshyam Chouhan, were also present in support of the cause.
RNSS General Secretary Abhishek Kumar emphasised the community’s historical marginalisation, stating, “Our ancestors led the first rebellion for India’s freedom, yet our people remain neglected. This protest is a cry for justice. Our struggle will continue until our demands are met.”
He urged both the state and central governments to collaborate on resolving the issues faced by the community.
The protesters warned of escalating demonstrations if their concerns remain unaddressed. The RNSS highlighted the Nonia community’s socio-economic struggles, particularly in Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and other states, where land disputes and bureaucratic hurdles hinder access to basic rights. The protest marks a significant moment in the Nonia community’s fight for justice, as leaders and activists vow to continue their efforts until concrete actions are taken by the governments.
