JORHAT, Aug 22: Women in Titabar town took to the streets on Thursday to protest against recent incidents of sexual harassment in Jorhat district.
The protest was triggered by two incidents of molestation earlier this month. In one case, a Taekwondo coach from Delhi allegedly molested a minor girl under the pretext of training her inside a room at the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex in Titabar. In the other incident, a youth allegedly grabbed the hand of a college girl on the street in front of her college during the daytime.
The protesters, holding banners and shouting slogans, demanded strict legal action against the perpetrators and called for enhanced safety measures by the police to ensure the security of women in Titabar. They emphasised that women’s safety is essential for a healthy and progressive society.
In both cases, the accused were apprehended by the police, and legal action has been initiated. The protesters not only called for severe punishment for those responsible but also demanded legal action against the Titabar District Sports Association for their role in the lack of safety measures within the sports complex.
