DIPHU, Oct 31: The Sericulture Department and Irrigation Department under Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) gave away a cash award of Rs 10,000 to 130 silkworm farmers along with rearing equipment.
The Irrigation Department distributed canvas pipes to the farmers under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) – Har Khet Ko Pani Phase – II.
Another 336 farmers also received electricity bill debit from the government under the same scheme PMKSY- Har Khet Ko Pani for irrigating their farms in a distribution programme held here at Sarsing Teron (Langkung Habe) Memorial Town Hall.
Attending the function the chief executive member (CEM), KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang said, “The PMKSY – Har Khet Ko Pani was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expand cultivated areas with assured irrigation, reduce wastage of water and improve water use efficiency.”
According to him, in Karbi Anglong the scheme was launched in the second phase.
“A total of 450 farmers have availed the PMKSY. The target is to benefit 1000 farmers by letting them irrigate,” he said.
The CEM also said that the Amreng Irrigation Scheme with a total cost of Rs 583 crore on completion will be the largest irrigation scheme in Northeast India. The state government has a contribution of Rs 64 crore.
When operational it will benefit Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) constituencies like Kopili, Amreng, part of Hamren and Bithung Rengthama.
Earlier, executive member (EM), KAAC, Irrigation, Sericulture, etc., Lunsing Teron said there are various schemes under the Sericulture Department to support silkworm farmers. It is easy and profitable. If erri fodder plants (castor plants) are planted in one bigha, the income received from erri worms rearing by farmers in one season is Rs 2 lakh. Silkworm rearing is easy and also profitable and farmers should go for it.
The programme was also attended by chairman, KAAC, Raju Tisso and deputy chairman, Ajit Kumar Dey; MP Horensing Bey; MLA, Dorsing Ronghang; EMs and MACs.
