DIPHU, June 5: Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), marked World Environment Day on Wednesday by planting tree saplings in Diphu.
World Environment Day was celebrated across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, with the Environment and Forest Department of KAAC hosting an event at Karbi People’s Hall in Taralangso.
This year’s theme focused on ‘Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.’
Addressing the gathering, Ronghang announced, “KAAC has procured 10 lakh sandalwood saplings and agor for plantation. We will provide 10 sandalwood saplings free of cost to interested individuals. These trees have the potential to yield crores in value within 12 years.”
Regarding land issues, Ronghang stated that the process of evicting encroachers from P/VGR land in Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong district, will resume as per a decision made before the Parliamentary elections, following the Supreme Court verdict.
A meeting was convened by the CEM with KAAC and Forest officials to discuss the eviction drive, attended by newly elected MP Amarsing Tisso, who is also an executive member (EM) of KAAC, along with other EMs, Autonomous Council members, and MLAs.
Turning back to World Environment Day celebrations, Chokihola Police Station and Nilip Press Club jointly observed the day by planting tree saplings, with officials and local representatives participating.
Don Bosco School, Satgaon in West Karbi Anglong, organised a daylong programme where students held a procession from the school to Satgaon market, advocating for tree plantation.
Fr. Sebastian Kuricheal, Provincial of Guwahati Province, Pan Bazar, urged students to contribute to environmental conservation efforts and shared insights on climate change impacts.
Various activities such as drawing competitions, skits on tree conservation, recycling initiatives, and essay writing on environmental topics were held across schools.
In Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong, a procession was organized by the Karbi Students Association to mark the occasion.
