KHERONI, March 21: Tuliram Ronghang, chief executive member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), has urged Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Chandrakant Raghunath Patil, to include the Amreng Irrigation Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (PMKSY-AIBP).
The development comes after Ronghang held a held a pivotal meeting with Patil in New Delhi.
Ronghang emphasised the project’s alignment with national priorities under PMKSY-AIBP, which accelerates large-scale irrigation initiatives.
He also underscored its critical role in addressing water scarcity and uplifting marginalised farming communities in the district.
“Union Minister Patil assured a thorough evaluation of the proposal, acknowledging its potential to bolster rural development in Assam’s Karbi Anglong region,” he added.
The proposed Amreng Irrigation Project, highlighted for its transformative potential, aims to provide reliable irrigation facilities to 6,800 hectares of agricultural land, directly benefiting approximately 10,000 residents across 19 villages in the West Karbi Anglong District.
With a robust benefit-cost ratio of 1.72, the project is poised to drive significant socio-economic progress in the region by enhancing agricultural productivity, livelihoods, and water security.
If approved, the Amreng project will mark a milestone in Assam’s irrigation infrastructure, fostering long-term resilience and prosperity for Karbi Anglong’s agrarian communities. The KAAC leadership expressed optimism about securing central support to expedite the initiative’s implementation.
The meeting was attended by a delegation of key stakeholders, including MP Amarsing Tisso; MLA Darsing Ronghang; KAAC executive members (EMs) Lunsing Teron, Prabhat Chandra Taro, Ritesh Enghi, and Madhurjya Dhekial Phukan; MACs Dr Mongve Rongpi and Headsing Rongphar; former MP and ex-CEM Dr Jayanta Rongpi; and ex-EM Elwin Teron, among other dignitaries.
Their collective presence underscored the regional consensus on the project’s urgency.
