NAGAON, May 13: A woman was injured after being attacked by her nephew in broad daylight near Chakarigaon on Monday.
According to sources, the youth, identified as Devananda Tamuli from Padumani near Puranigudam, was being brought to Nagaon in a vehicle by his aunt and other relatives. During the journey, Tamuli abruptly exited the vehicle upon reaching Chakarigaon and entered a nearby pharmacy, where he reportedly slapped an employee without provocation.
The situation escalated when he proceeded to a local pan shop and smashed its glass counter, causing panic among locals. As his aunt, Amreswari Tamuli, tried to intervene and calm him down, Devananda allegedly attacked her with a shard of broken glass, inflicting injuries.
Onlookers at the scene quickly restrained the youth and alerted the authorities. Personnel from the Itachali Police Outpost reached the spot, took Tamuli into custody, and arranged for the injured woman to be taken to a hospital for treatment.
While the exact reason behind the violent outburst remains unclear, family members have indicated that Tamuli has been struggling with mental health issues. The police have launched an investigation and are currently reviewing eyewitness accounts and other evidence to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
The incident has left residents in shock and raised concerns over the need for mental health support systems and early intervention strategies within families.
