GUWAHATI, May 31: World No Tobacco Day was observed at Silchar Cancer Centre, ACCF & District Tobacco Control Cell, Cachar on Friday with a call to avoid tobacco consumption and production for the protection of the environment. This year’s theme was ‘Protecting Children From Tobacco Industry Interference’.
Speaking on this year’s theme, the director of Silchar Cancer Centre, Dr T Kannan, highlighted the environmental impact of growing a single tobacco plant or producing a single cigarette. He urged everyone to quit using all forms of tobacco to prevent environmental catastrophe.
Dr T Kannan emphasised the need to create awareness among society against tobacco consumption. Dr Ahimik Biswas also stressed the importance of raising awareness against tobacco and its harmful impacts on human health. He discussed pre-oral cancer, its symptoms, and the importance of diagnosis, as well as organising community outreach programs for early cancer detection.
A pledge was taken on the occasion at the hospital campus to quit tobacco both inside and outside the hospital premises and to assist the public in quitting tobacco from their lives. An anti-tobacco rally was also flagged off by Dr Phulkumari Talukdar.
The program was attended by doctors, staff, Abhijit Bhattacharjee (DHM, SCC), and administrative staff of the hospitals.
