World Tourism Day celebrated with enthusiasm in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR, Sept 27: The World Tourism Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Sivasagar. Tourism minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, along with Arjun Bhogeswar Barua and veteran athlete Toyabin Nissa, flagged off the “Run for Heritage,” a mini-marathon organised for the occasion. More than 300 participants from various places took part in the 9 km run, which started near the Tourist office on the bank of the Sivasagar tank and ended at Rangghar via Chipahi gaon.

In the male category, Bijay Deka secured the first position, followed by Sanibul Islam in second place, and Bipin Munda of Jorhat in third place. Among the females, Pahi Keot from Nagaon secured the first position, Kasturi Neog from Sivasagar got second place, and Fulmoni Urang was adjudged third.

Sivasagar SP Subhrajyoti Bora also participated in the marathon.

Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah revealed that a UNESCO team is set to arrive at Charaideo, Sivasagar, to make a final assessment of the site before its nomination as a World Heritage Site. He expressed optimism that the UNESCO designation would significantly boost tourism prospects in the district.

In line with this year’s World Tourism Day theme, Assam Tourism organised photo and video competitions and other activities emphasizing a green environment. Minister Baruah noted the positive involvement of the private sector in supporting government initiatives to develop tourism in Assam. He instructed the DC of Sivasagar to provide assistance to investors interested in tourism projects.

Baruah emphasised the historical significance of monuments and relics like the Sivadoul, Rangghar, and Jamuna and stressed the importance of consulting with the local community when planning infrastructure development in the town. Regarding the proposal to connect the Rangghar Beautification Project with the royal capital complex Talatalghar, the minister mentioned that people occupying the area have already acquired permanent land pattas. If the government seeks to acquire their land, they will receive adequate compensation.

The concluding function was held at Bhatiapar Junskaya Resort, bringing a successful and enthusiastic celebration of World Tourism Day to a close.
