In a troubling development, suspected members of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) have allegedly demanded extortion from a prominent businessman in Guwahati. The incident came to light when the businessman’s son received a threatening call on June 13, instructing the family to pay a substantial sum of money or face dire consequences. The businessman, alarmed by the threats, promptly lodged a complaint with the Dispur Police Station.

The police have registered a case under section 387 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt in order to commit extortion. Investigations are underway to trace the call and identify the individuals involved. This incident has heightened concerns about the resurgence of extortion activities by insurgent groups in Assam, which had seen a decline in recent years.

Local business communities have expressed their alarm and urged the authorities to take swift action to ensure their safety. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by insurgent groups in the region and the need for sustained efforts to maintain law and order.
