New Delhi, Feb 21: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the current state of affairs in India at a public meeting on the 39th day of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao. He claimed that 90 per cent of the country’s population was deprived of resources, while just 2 to 3 per cent controlled the wealth.
Gandhi referred to these individuals as modern day Maharajas, living luxuriously at the expense of the common people. He advocated for a caste census followed by an economic and financial survey to determine control of resources in the country.
His allegations included that 90 per cent of the population, which includes various social groups, were denied resources and representation in various sectors. Gandhi pointed to demonetisation and the implementation of GST as factors that have negatively impacted the common people, along with halted recruitment processes.
He stated that the ‘Agnipath’ scheme of recruitment in defence services was further marginalising 73 per cent of the population. Gandhi believes the proposed caste census and economic survey will begin to shift control to the 90 per cent of the population currently being denied resources.
