GUWAHATI, May 3: Axis Bank on Sunday inaugurated its first digital locker-focused branch at Capital Green, DLF Midtown Plaza in New Delhi, marking a step towards enhancing secure banking services through advanced technology and automation.
The branch was inaugurated by M Nagaraju, Secretary, Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance, Government of India, along with Ashok Tyagi, in the presence of senior bank officials including Amitabh Chaudhry and Munish Sharda.
The initiative comes at a time when India is witnessing a widening gap in the availability of safe-deposit lockers, particularly in high-density urban centres.
Industry estimates suggest that by 2030, nearly six crore affluent Indians are expected to require bank lockers, while the current supply stands at approximately 60 lakh lockers.
The shortage is more acute in large cities, where urban living is increasingly concentrated in gated residential developments.
Axis Bank’s digital locker-focused branch has been designed as a compact, technology-enabled facility that offers automated locker services within premium residential ecosystems.
The model integrates advanced security systems with customer-centric features to provide enhanced privacy, convenience and control over access.
The bank said the new format also reflects a shift towards reimagining branch infrastructure to align with evolving urban lifestyles and customer expectations.
Speaking at the inauguration, Amitabh Chaudhry said, “At Axis Bank, our focus on customer obsession drives a culture where we anticipate the evolving needs of our customers and design innovative solutions to address them. As customers seek greater control, transparency and convenience in safeguarding their valuables, our digital locker-focused branch reimagines the experience by placing access, privacy and security firmly in their hands, supported by advanced technology.”
He added, “This proposition reflects our intent to build a more embedded, ecosystem-led banking model aligned with modern, urban and premium lifestyles. It brings to life our vision of a future-ready branch network built around how our customers live, work and bank today.”
The bank said the initiative is part of its broader strategy to strengthen its presence in densely populated urban locations while offering differentiated services that go beyond traditional banking formats.
