Militant arrested for blast near Imphal airport, say police

IMPHAL, May 7: A member of a proscribed outfit in Manipur has been arrested from the Imphal East district in connection with a blast near the state capital’s airport a couple of days ago, police said on Thursday.

Officials said Laishram Ibomcha Meitei (47) was arrested from his residence at Wangkhei in Imphal East district on Wednesday and has been remanded in police custody for 10 days.

The proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party had claimed responsibility for the May 3 explosion that happened barely one kilometre from the Imphal airport.

Security forces have arrested a 51-year-old woman member of the same outfit from her residence at Sagolband in Imphal West district on Wednesday, but clarified that the action was not related to the explosion. They also arrested a self-styled lieutenant of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) from M Songgel village in Churachandpur district on Tuesday, police said, adding that a cache of arms and explosives was seized following his interrogation.
