Guwahati, Aug 8: Addressing the recent Supreme Court verdict in the Modi surname defamation case, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, has called for openness and accountability in the light of the recent Supreme Court ruling that granted Rahul Gandhi relief. The Chief Minister has requested the Congress party to post the Supreme Court’s decision on official Twitter account so that it is publicly accessible.
A trial court condemned Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison on March 23. However, after 134 days, the Supreme Court intervened, allowing a stay of Rahul Gandhi’s sentencing, in the case mentioned earlier.
In reference to the verdict, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Supreme Court’s tone was critical of Rahul Gandhi’s views. In paragraphs 8 and 12 of the verdict, the court noted its objections regarding Gandhi’s choice of terminology and highlighted some characteristics of his character and behavior.
Sarma highlighted that these critical portions of the ruling should be made public. Sarma emphasized that such transparency would allow the public to form an educated judgement on whether Rahul Gandhi had obtained a “clean chit” from the court.
