KHERONI, March 10: 60 shops and 9 residential houses were destroyed as a rampant fire broke out in the Harangajao market area in the early hours on Monday.
The blaze erupted around 2 am, displacing numerous families and business owners.
Eyewitnesses said that firefighters and the locals spent the entire night trying to tamp the inferno.
However, the area was strewn with charred debris by dawn.
Miraculously, no casualties were reported, though the economic and emotional toll on affected families remains profound.
Chief executive member (CEM) of NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Debolal Gorlosa, swiftly visited the site to assess the damage and reassure the victims.
“We are deeply saddened by this disaster. Every possible assistance will be extended to help families and businesses rebuild their lives and livelihoods,” he stated, emphasising the administration’s commitment to relief efforts.
Accompanying the CEM were the President of BJP Dima Hasao, Dhriti Thaosen; executive members (EMs) Donpainon Thaosen and Probita Johori Bathari; members of autonomous council (MACs), John Phoitong and Rupali Langthasa.
The delegation interacted with affected residents, pledging urgent aid, including temporary shelters, financial support, and resources for reconstruction.
For now, the focus remains on healing and recovery, with officials urging collective solidarity to restore normalcy.
