MARGHERITA, May 19: The Margherita College Alumni Association convened a meeting during a campus recruitment drive at Margherita College, demanding the provincialisation of the science stream, which has remained non provincialised for 24 years. Manash Pratim Gogoi, the general secretary of the association, highlighted this long standing issue, emphasising the need for immediate action from the state education minister, Dr Ranoj Pegu.
The recruitment drive, organised by the Margherita College Placement Cell in collaboration with the Alumni Association, aimed to address the issue of educated unemployment, particularly in banking institutions. Over fifty educated youths participated in this event.
During the meeting, Dr Atonu Kakoty, the principal of Margherita College, alongside the president, secretary, and members of the Alumni Association, deliberated on various infrastructure-related challenges facing the college. Specifically, they discussed the persistent absence of provincialisation for the science section, despite its establishment over two decades ago.
Key figures present at the meeting included Mulen Baruah, president of the Margherita College Alumni Association; Chintu Gogoi, assistant secretary; Anjan Bordoloi, Margherita College teacher coordinator; and Nilav Jyoti Konwar, executive member. Following the discussions, association officials visited the science departments to assess the specific challenges faced by the science stream.
The science stream at Margherita College, serving as the sole science education hub in the Margherita region of Tinsukia district, has significantly contributed to the educational landscape, benefiting students from Margherita and neighbouring areas like Arunachal Pradesh. Despite consistently yielding satisfactory results, the non-provincialisation of the science stream has been a persistent concern.
Expressing discontent over the delay in provincialisation, the alumni body urged the state government to take prompt action. They emphasised that over a dozen teachers had also voiced their demand for the immediate provincialisation of the science wing, which has been delivering quality education for years.
The alumni association has consistently advocated for the provincialisation of the science stream, urging the state education minister to ensure its perpetuation through official provincialisation. They have communicated their demands to the media through a press note, seeking resolution to this long standing issue.
