Workshop on vermin composting held

NAGAON, Feb 11: The ECO Club of Nowgong Girls’ College organised a day long workshop on ‘Vermicomposting, Solid waste Management & Rainwater harvesting’.

The workshop was supported by Ministry of environment, forest and climate change and implemented by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council under the Environment Education Programme.

The programme was started with the felicitation of the dignitaries and principal, Nowgong Girls’ College Kulen Chandra Das delivered the welcome address, highlighting the need to restore ground water levels and emerging concerns of water scarcity, suggesting measures to conserve water. Das also elaborated on the alarming use of plastic waste and suggested measures for ensuring environment sustainability. 

Zina Moni Shandilya, coordinator of Eco Club moderated the workshop and provided insights into the environment education programme initiated by Ministry of environment, forest and climate change.

 She also highlighted the various ongoing activities under Eco Club for creating awareness among the responsible citizens.

Sagarika Patowary, assistant professor, North Eastern regional Institute of Water and Land Management(NERIWALM) was invited as resource person to provide training on rainwater Harvesting. She explained the concept of rainwater harvesting and its significance in water conservation.

She elaborated the basic rainwater harvesting system, including the catchment area, storage units, filtration mechanisms citing animated videos. She emphasized the famous concept of ‘catch the rain where it falls’

Prarthana Priyom Hazarika, assistant professor, North Eastern regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM) was also invited as resource person to provide training on vermicomposting techniques and creating the vermibed. 

Hazarika thoroughly explained the methods, process, materials required and preventive measures involved in vermicomposting. She also highlighted the benefits of organic fertilizers and the significance of vermicomposting in reducing the solid waste. She carried out practical hands on session where the students were taught to layer the vermibed and release the earthworms for initiating vermicomposting process.

Around 60 students from nearby schools, along with their teacher in charge, NCC volunteers, students from Nowgong Girls’ College actively participated in the workshop. In the valedictory session, certificates were distributed jointly by the resource persons and Dr Sanchita Bora IQAC coordinator, Nowgong Girls’ College and the workshop was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by the Eco Club coordinator.
