NEW DELHI, Dec 13: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told the Lok Sabha on Friday that his ministry has requested to block certain websites offering fraudulent jobs abroad and also recommended the prosecution of those involved in such scams.
Responding to the supplementaries, Jaishankar said the government has brought back 1,167 Indians from Cambodia and another 497 from Myanmar, who were taken there on the pretext of getting them jobs.
He said people are made to work illegally by those running such online scams.
“In India, we have requested for the blocking of sites which promote such jobs. We have recommended prosecution in certain cases for people who have been involved in this,” the minister said during the Question Hour.
He said a “different set of problems” have been raised for West Asia, the Gulf and the Middle East, “where we have a situation” of underpayment or non-payment of wages and maltreatment of Indian professionals and workers.
Jaishankar asserted that the Indian embassies are very active and carry out regular reviews.
He further highlighted the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, terming the situation as a matter of concern for India. The minister said India hopes that the new dispensation in Bangladesh will settle down to a mutually beneficial stable relationship with India.
“We have drawn their attention to our concerns. Recently the foreign secretary visited Dhaka. This subject came up in his meetings. And it is our expectation that in its own interests, Bangladesh will take action for the safety of minorities,” he said during the Question Hour.
The minister said India has a good history of development projects in Bangladesh.
“In fact when we speak about the neighbourhood first policy, almost every neighbouring country with the exception of Pakistan and China, we have had important development projects and that is the case with Bangladesh as well,” he said. (PTI)
