SIVASAGAR, March 5: The historic six-day Maha Shivaratri Mela at the Sivasagar Shivadoul has been inaugurated by the Union minister of state for petroleum, Rameswar Teli.
Teli ignited the ceremonial lamp at about 9 pm on Sunday night in the presence of members of the Doul Development Committee, Sivasagar district commissioner Adity Vikram Yadov, Dayananda Borgohain, Kartik Dutta, Dibya Rajkhowa and many other guests.
The Shivaratri Mela on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri in the three-century-old Siva-doul premises holds much significance in religious tourism in the state as hundreds of devotees and traders from different states gather here every year to offer prayers to the Lord Siva, the Hindu God of power, strength, love, and destruction.
People of all faiths throng the mela as it offers a variety of commodities besides different activities of merry making. This year the Doul Development Committee has made it a six-day affair without caring about the availability of civic amenities for the lakhs of devotees arriving at the mela.
