Lightning detector installed at MSSV, Nagaon

NAGAON, Nov 21: A significant step towards enhancing weather monitoring and atmospheric sciences research in the region was recently taken with the installation of a ‘lightning detector’ at Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva Viswavidyalaya, Nagaon campus.

This state-of-the-art equipment, provided by the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) under the Department of Space, government of India, will enable real-time monitoring of lightning activity in the area. This significant initiative was led by the vice-chancellor, Dr Mridul Hazarika, registrar, Dr Sarat Hazarika, joint registrar, Dr Nayan Moni Saikia, and deputy registrar, Dr Bichitra Bikash of the university.

To mark this remarkable occasion, a special invited talk was organised on Thursday by the department of Physics in collaboration with the IQAC of the university on ‘Lightning Physics and Observational Techniques’ at the conference hall of the university.

The invited talk was delivered by Dr Abhay Srivastava, a noted scientist at NESAC. Dr Srivastava’s insightful presentation shed light on the complex phenomenon of lightning, its formation, and the advanced techniques used to study it.
