GUWAHATI, Jan 9: The All India Coordinated Research Project on Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (AICRP on PHET), under the Department of Livestock Products Technology, College of Veterinary Science, Assam Veterinary and Fishery University (AVFU), organised a day-long Kisan Mela at the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, on Thursday.
The mela focused on value addition of meat, hygienic preparation of processed meat products, efficient utilisation of slaughterhouse by-products and conversion of such by-products into wealth-generating products. Various value-added meat products were showcased along with technologies involved in their production. Machineries and equipment developed by the centre for hygienic and efficient meat processing, aimed at minimising processing losses, were also exhibited.
A total of 70 entrepreneurs, members of self-help groups and stakeholders from different sectors attended the mela. The session was chaired by director of research, AVFU, Dr Probodh Bora. The mela was inaugurated by vice-chancellor of Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Dr Niranjan Kalita.
Registrar of AVFU Dr B K Sarmah, dean of the College of Veterinary Science Dr Bibekananda Saikia and director of extension education Dr H K Bhattacharya also graced the occasion. Principal investigator of AICRP on PHET, Department of Livestock Products Technology and associate dean of Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science Dr S K Laskar explained the objectives of the exhibition.
Demonstrations of the technologies and machineries developed by the centre were conducted by Dr Ankur Das, associate professor and co-principal investigator, along with Dr Santosh Upadhyay, Dr Protiva Gogoi, Dr Deepshikha Deori, scientist, Dr Sadhana Choudhury, Dr Kuleswan Pame, assistant professor, Department of Livestock Products Technology, Dr Kushal Jyoti Thakuria, Dr G Gonmei and technical assistant Anil Sarmah.
