GUWAHATI, May 22: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state is steadily progressing towards becoming a power surplus state through large-scale investments in energy infrastructure and electricity generation capacity.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said Assam has prepared an energy infrastructure vision worth ₹14,202 crore by 2035 and is currently implementing four major projects valued at ₹6,235 crore across the state.
“Assam is steadily moving towards becoming a power surplus state. With a ₹14,202 cr energy vision and ₹6,235 cr worth of projects already underway, we are strengthening our power infrastructure to support growth and ensure reliable supply for our people,” Sarma stated.
According to officials, the state government has been focusing on expanding electricity generation capacity, upgrading transmission networks and modernising distribution systems to meet rising power demand in both urban and rural areas.
The government is also placing emphasis on renewable energy initiatives, including solar power projects, as part of its long-term strategy for energy security and sustainability.
Hydropower and thermal power projects are also being upgraded to improve efficiency and increase overall supply capacity.
Officials said the energy vision is aimed at supporting industrial growth, infrastructure expansion and improving quality of life by ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across Assam.
The move towards becoming a power surplus state is also expected to strengthen Assam’s attractiveness as an investment destination in the Northeast.
The state has witnessed a steady increase in electricity demand in recent years due to rapid urbanisation, industrial expansion and wider household electrification.
In response, the government has been implementing projects to strengthen substations, transmission corridors and rural electrification infrastructure.
The Chief Minister has repeatedly stressed the importance of a stronger power sector to support Assam’s broader economic development plans and future industrial growth. Officials added that several energy projects are currently under different stages of implementation and are expected to significantly improve the state’s power generation and transmission capabilities in the coming years.
