DIBRUGARH, May 19: The Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) conducted an eviction drive on Saturday to clear illegal vendors who had set up their stalls in Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).
With the assistance of police personnel and CRPF, the DMC demolished several shops that had been illegally occupying land belonging to AMCH for many years. This move comes after Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi held an emergency meeting to address issues plaguing AMCH and instructed relevant departments to take action.
Illegal vendors had been occupying AMCH land and setting up shops for years, leading to congestion and hindering the free movement of ambulances and vehicles carrying emergency patients.
“We conducted the eviction drive to clear the illegal vendors occupying government land. Despite warnings to vacate the area, they did not comply, necessitating the eviction drive. Most of the stalls and shops were demolished,” stated an official of DMC.
Recently, there has been a proliferation of food stalls and shops in Dibrugarh, with many of them encroaching upon roadside areas.
Residents of Dibrugarh have raised concerns about the uncontrolled growth of food stalls and the resulting parking issues. They advocate for designated areas for vendors to set up their stalls and emphasise the importance of addressing parking problems exacerbated by illegal vendors.
