KHERONI, Feb 14: Illegal sand mining activity which is disturbing the ecology and peace in the border areas of West Karbi Anglong and Hojai, particularly at Jorashimolu has been a concern among locals.
The intensity of sand mining allegedly by mafia on the Kopili River is so high that it has damaged the roads in the area and polluted the environment.
The locals have complained that school and college going students in the area were having trouble traversing the road due to the movement of the machinery, illegal sand ferrying trucks and damaged roads.
Following complaints by villagers, local BJP MLA of Hojai, Ramkrishna Ghosh visited the area and shut down the illegal sand mining, but within less than a week the sand mining activity resumed.
The illegal miners operate with impunity with no fear from the forest department and the administration, sources said.
The residents of the area have been protesting against such sand mining and smuggling activities in the area.
