GUWAHATI, Mar 22: The under-construction Khanikar Stadium in Dibrugarh is set to be completed by the end of this year, marking a significant enhancement in Upper Assam’s sporting infrastructure. As part of its expansion, the stadium’s seating capacity will increase from 5,000 to 25,000, making it a major venue for large-scale sporting events in the region.
During a recent visit, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected the progress of the project. He directed officials to ensure timely completion and emphasized the importance of equipping the stadium with modern facilities.
Once completed, Khanikar Stadium will include a main gallery, an indoor stadium, hostel facilities, a VIP block, a swimming pool, and other world-class amenities. The project aligns with the state government’s vision to enhance sports infrastructure and promote youth engagement in sports across Assam.
The stadium is expected to become a key sports hub, capable of hosting national and international tournaments while also providing opportunities for local talent to grow and excel.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to developing high-quality sports infrastructure across the state. He highlighted Khanikar Stadium’s role in establishing Dibrugarh as a center for sports excellence in Upper Assam.
Locals and sports enthusiasts have welcomed the initiative, hoping that the stadium will attract national-level tournaments and create new opportunities for aspiring athletes from the region.
Earlier, in December last year, CM Sarma had visited the construction site and expressed dissatisfaction over the slow progress of the project, which began in 2020. However, with renewed efforts and strict monitoring, authorities are now confident that the stadium will be completed within the revised timeline.
