National Handloom Day 2024 celebrated

Events in Chirang and Morigaon highlight the role of weaving in local livelihoods

KOKRAJHAR, Aug 7: The 10th edition of National Handloom Day 2024 was celebrated at Tukrajhar, Bengtol in Chirang district on Wednesday. The event was organised by the Department of Handloom & Textile, government of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), where several hundred weavers and cluster workers from different areas of the BTR districts participated.

Several handloom clusters were accorded financial assistance under the Bodoland Handloom Mission, government of Bodoland Territorial Region, to extend support for producing multiple handloom products in the Bodoland region. The executive members of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), including Dhananjay Basumatary, Ranjit Basumatary, Daobaisa Boro, and Rakesh Brahma, were present as guests and handed over cheques to the handloom clusters.

A showcase of handloom products was also carried out on the occasion to mark the celebration. The chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Pramod Boro, extended warm greetings on National Handloom Day. He stated that the government of BTR is working dedicatedly towards the uplift and development of the Bodoland handloom sector. He informed that several initiatives have been undertaken by the government of BTR to significantly advance the handloom sector

“Our BTR is home to rich and unique handloom products that are celebrated across the world. On this occasion, let’s reaffirm our commitment to supporting our hardworking weavers and ensuring their holistic development,” CEM Boro said.

Our Morigaon correspondent adds: The Speaker of Assam Assembly, Biswajit Daimari, inaugurated the programme organised for National Handloom Day at Morigaon Bihutoli Ground on Wednesday. The Speaker delivered an important speech on the weaving profession at length and discussed how the weavers of Assam could adopt weaving as their livelihood and become self-reliant through the weaving profession.

Earlier, the Speaker was warmly welcomed by the district commissioner of Morigaon, the director of Handloom & Textile, the superintendent of police, ADCs, and the superintendent of Handloom & Textile, Morigaon, at the Morigaon Circuit House.
