SIVASAGAR, Dec 2: With a daylong programme, Rangpur Sahitya Sabha celebrated its diamond jubilee at the Amolapatty Namghar premises on Saturday. Attending the open session, noted writer and former HoD of English at SMD College, Professor Tuwaram Khanikar, said that the recognition of the Assamese language as a classical language is a certificate that the language will not die. However, this is not enough to keep alive a language that is so rich in pedagogy and etymology. Just one letter or morpheme in Assamese can express an entire sentence, such as ra, hu, ka, etc. Hem Baruah, president of Rangpur Sahitya Sabha, hoisted the flag, while Dhiren Bhuyan, Putali Goswami, and Prema Gogoi performed the tarpan. Jeuti Bora Bhuyan, the secretary, spoke on the objectives.
The open session was addressed by Dr Bharati Dutta, former professor of Monoharidevi Kanoi College; Dr Prakash Kotoky, former principal of Sibsagar College; Dr Nirupama Mahanta, president of Jila Sahitya Sabha; and Dr Arundhati Mahanta, former professor of Gargaon College.
The souvenir, edited by Mukul Nath and Uzzal Thakur, was released along with the following books: Maharajat Kanti by Apurba Bhuyan; Smriti Dhara by Jeuti Bhuyan; Moi aru Prantik by Uzzal Kumar Thakur; Sishu Geet aru Kabita by Ila Mohan Buraghain; Asomor Luka Samajar Jilingani by Niru Chetia; Urmimalar Covid Kalin Sumeru Kumeru by Pranati Bora Bhuyan; Yatra by Devajani Mahanta; Sahitya Buranji aru Sanskriti by Prema Gogoi. These were released by the guests.
