NAGAON, May 12: The Assam Science Technology and Environment in collaboration with Eco Club of the Dhing College has organised a day-long workshop on solid waste management at the college premises here.
It was organised with special support of Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change.

The primary aim of the workshop was to educate students and provide them with holistic understanding on solid waste management (SWM) issues, ill effects of wrong practices of SWM, best practices of SWM, importance of proper sanitation, sowing awareness of good practices on solid waste management, wastewater treatment, livelihoods, and public-private partnerships to gain knowledge in sustainable waste and environmental management system. It also focused on different types of waste, their handling, storage, disposal requirements and their potential effect on the environment.
The workshop was inaugurated by Biman Hazarika, principal of the college. While addressing the occasion, Hazarika highlighted on solid waste and the need for its management. A handbook on solid waste management penned by Sanjeeb Kumar Nath, was inaugurated by Hazarika too. Nath, co-ordinator of Eco Club, elucidated the workshop’s objectives.
Following the inaugural session, technical sessions were initiated in which over 135 participants including students, faculty members and resource persons from 14 high schools, ME schools and Eco-Club participated in the workshop.
Pradeep Baishya, associate professor of the mechanical engineering department of the Assam Engineering College, Farista Yasmin, associate professor and head of the department of botany of the Nowgong College (Autonomous), Ajit Debnath, associate professor and head of the department of economics of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya, Binita Baishya and proprietor of the Eco Waste Management attended the event as the resource persons in the technical sessions of the workshop.
